Description
Reading Level 3 - 4.5Interest Level 5 - 12
U.S. History Shorts are fun, bite-sized history lessons for students reading below grade level. These engaging programs were designed for students of all ages who need help learning the basic concepts covered in world history classes. The low reading level and age-appropriate illustrations make the short, high-interest passages and activities appealing to struggling readers and students with learning differences.
The Shorts
Each 210-page book includes between 28 and 30 one-page stories, or shorts, that focus on key historical concepts. Featured in 14-point font for easier readability, the shorts can be used as introductory lessons or taught in greater depth with additional resources. They also serve as an overview for topics that teachers wish to cover quickly.
Activity Sheets
Following each short are four activity sheets and a quiz. For each short, a one-page quiz assesses students' understanding of the most important information. Students practice reading-comprehension skills and answer content-area recall questions; interpret maps, charts, and graphs; research significant historical people, places, and events; and express opinions through writing.
The activity sheets include multiple-choice, short-answer, and extension questions as well as crossword puzzles. Each short also includes a visual activity which consists of a map, chart, or graph. Quizzes include questions written in standardized test format. Answer keys are also provided.
Audio CDs (also available separately or as a set)
Two sets of audio CDs feature recordings of each of the shorts in the corresponding books. This audio component helps improve comprehension for struggling learners and supports students with diverse learning styles. Two CDs are included in each set for U. S. History Shorts 1 and for U. S. History Shorts 2.
